About PIPE Networks

Corporate Profile

PIPE Networks is widely acknowledged as one of the most innovative telecommunications carrier operating within Australia and internationally. Since 2002, we have deployed one of the largest metropolitan optic fibre networks in the country, the largest Internet eXchange (IX), and the latest international submarine cable system.

We continue to revolutionise the Australian telecommunications industry with our extensive network coverage, competitive and market-leading products, and world-class dedication to customer service.

PIPE group

PIPE Networks began life as IX Services Australia Pty Ltd in 2001, and formally commenced operations in 2002 when we launched our first Internet eXchange peering point. We are now Australia’s largest peering provider and operate over 30 IX points in six cities, with over 300 active connections.

In 2002 we acquired a Telecommunications Carrier License, which allowed us to connect our peering points with our own optic fibre network. Following this fibre installation, substantial demand was recognised from wholesale, corporate and government organisations seeking direct access to unlit or “dark” fibre.

We have installed over 1,400 km of cable (consisting of over 200,000 km of optic fibre) in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide, with over 700 on-net buildings, data centres and Telstra exchanges. In addition to our domestic network, in 2009 our subsidiary PIPE International (Australia) Pty Ltd completed PPC-1; a 6900 km carrier-neutral submarine cable from Sydney to Guam. This created a much-needed third choice in the previously carrier-locked international bandwidth market, and notably increased Australia’s international bandwidth capacity whilst decreasing costs.

In 2010, we merged with TPG Telecom, a market leader in residential internet services, creating a combined entity with a market capitalisation of over $1.5 billion. By leveraging each other’s assets to enable service delivery, we continue to create value-driven change in the telecommunications industry, to the benefit of our customers.

We are now a part of the TPG Telecom Limited (ASX: TPG) group of companies. TPG Telecom combines highly complementary network infrastructures and leading talent in Australia’s mobile and fixed broadband sectors, with an integrated offering that leverages a comprehensive portfolio of fixed and mobile products. TPG Telecom operates a number of leading mobile and internet brands including Vodafone, TPG, iiNet, Internode, Lebara and AAPT.
